GIS Software – Free Resources – World Digital Elevation Models and Bathymetry
These are just two of the free GIS resources available online in the category of World Digital Elevation Models and Bathymetry.
Free GIS Resource 1 – General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO)
The General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO) aims to provide the most authoritative, publicly-available bathymetry data sets for the world’s oceans. The General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans (GEBCO) work on the development of a range of bathymetric data sets and data products. The GEBCO is a team of international experts, and offer gridded bathymetric data sets, the GEBCO Digital Atlas, the GEBCO world map and the GEBCO Gazetteer of Undersea Feature Names.
The GEBCO One Minute Grid offers a global, one-arc minute bathymentry dataset. A global 30 arc-second grid is in development stage. Both grids are freely available and downloadable along with the custom software required to extract the grids to a useable format.
Free GIS Resource 2 – ETOPO1
ETOPO1 is a freely available DEM that includes both bathymetry and topography. It has a resolution of 1 minute (approximately 2km) and covers the whole world. The resolution is suitable for world mapping. Built from a number of different global and regional data sets. ETOPO1 is available in “Ice Surface” and “Bedrock” versions. “Ice Surface” being the top of the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets, and “Bedrock” being based on the ice sheets. There are historical versions of global relief grids which are available but deprecated.
GTOPO30 and Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) are both useful free GIS resources in the same category of world elevation models and bathymetry.
